IMG_1269

This week in maths, we have been learning about ratio. As part of this topic, in groups, we were tasked with creating a brand new ice lolly recipe using different fruit flavours to create a unique taste. Of course, we had to freeze them and enjoy them during golden time!

DRAGONS MAKE THE PERFECT PETS!

C4E240A9-9C64-4E9E-A11E-B97FDDDBFBBAThis week, we have rounded off our How to Train Your Dragon novel study by producing a poem all about what makes dragons such brilliant pets. We also created a piece of artwork to create a close up  of a dragons eye to use as the background of our writing. I’m sure you’ll agree Esme’s looks amazing!

LANDING MODULE EXPERIMENT

E2A33393-70EE-44A3-998C-62FFEAA8101A

Last week in Science, we had the job of helping Planet Express design a new landing module for their ‘space eggs’, as their usual method of delivery was out of order.

We were designated groups and had to show lots of teamwork skills to create a new prototype for a landing module, which would keep the eggs safe. Each group only had access to the following:

1 bin liner

3 sheets of newspaper

1 A3 sheet of paper

1 metre of sellotape

we then judged each other’s designs on build quality, design and practicality, with each design having its own unique style!

We then dropped each landing module from 3 metres and discovered our messy results! Then judging its landing module on its overall effectiveness. Out of 6 eggs, 4 survived!

we then discussed why parachute style designs would be good on a planet like Earth, which has a thick atmosphere and why a different approach would be needed on a planet like mercury, which las very little atmosphere.

This week in science we have been investing parachute design. We looked into how the generation of air resistance helps slow a sky diver safely and effectively.

e then used our investigation skills to design a new 3 prototypes of parachute and tested them to discover which was most effective.

Book reviews

We’re all so sad to have finished our class book ‘The Explorer’, but what a fantastic story it was! We have loved it from page 1 all the way through to the epilogue on page 400. It has taught us so much about South America and the Amazon rainforest in particular. If you haven’t read it yet, the everyone in year 5 agrees that it is an absolute must-read! Here is Holly’s Amazon book review as prof of just how much we love it

BACK TO SCHOOL

A376AC43-2CBF-4C57-8DBD-3F05B2B3601D

Wow, well what a start to Year 5 we have had! In the 5 weeks we have been back at school we have already covered so much! We have learned so many facts about South America so far, an abundance of maths topics and much more.

The highlight of of our time so far has to be the book we have been reading, The Explorer. Because of this we have spent time learning survival skills in the woodland area, den making, finding water sources and more!

we’ve also had plenty of visitors to our VIP table & our recently opened Starbooks, as well as lots of children enjoying the luxury of the star of the week cushion! I’m sure the children have enjoyed their start back just as much as I have and I’m really excited for the fun and learning we’re going to partake in this year!
